Meet sildenafil
Sildenafil is the generic form of Viagra® — a PDE5 inhibitor that increases blood flow in response to arousal. It has more than 25 years of clinical use for erectile dysfunction and is prescribed only after a licensed provider reviews your health history.
How to take it
Take as directed by your provider — typically about an hour before sex. It starts working in as little as 30 minutes and its effects last up to about 4 hours. A high-fat meal can delay how quickly it starts working, and heavy alcohol should be avoided while taking it.
Potential side effects
The most common side effects are headache, flushing, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and temporary changes in vision. Serious side effects are rare — seek medical care right away for an erection lasting longer than 4 hours, or for sudden vision or hearing loss. Never take sildenafil with nitrates.
Important safety information
Do not use sildenafil if you take nitrates or guanylate cyclase stimulators — the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
